August 17th was not just another day for the tech community in Central Florida. The Google Development Group for Central Florida (GDG) hosted a landmark meetup with Randal Schwartz, an icon in the software industry. As I, along with co-organizers Michael and Kendra, initiated the proceedings, the obvious excitement was evident among the attendees.
Thanks to the generosity of Design Interactive, Inc (DI), the venue was buzzing with anticipation. They didn’t just provide us with a place; the refreshments added warmth to the evening, making everyone feel right at home.
Joining us virtually from Oregon, Randal's infectious charisma was evident right from the start. As we awaited the main event, he regaled attendees with anecdotes and insights. The evening wasn't just a prelude to his talk on Dart and Flutter, but serve a teaser to the much-awaited DevFest Florida 2023, slated for October 14th at the Seminole State Community College. Details Here
Randal's discussion was more than just an introduction to Dart and Flutter. He delved deep into the history, exploring the 'why' behind Google's choice of these platforms. His own journey to becoming one of the inaugural Google Developer Experts (GDE) for Dart and Flutter was both enlightening and inspiring.
Throughout the presentation, Randal shared:
- The comprehensive capabilities of Flutter as the next-gen UI SDK.
- Dart's easy-to-grasp features, making mobile app creation approachable and easy for beginners.
- A walk down memory lane highlighting the evolution from vendor lock-in systems to the revolutionary Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS).
- The uniqueness of Flutter, emphasizing its ability to render its own widgets using Skia from Chrome (and soon, Impeller).
- The potential of Flutter to craft optimized 2D mobile apps and its gradual work into 3D.
- Plus, it gives developers a smoother ride, without the hassle of a JavaScript bridge.
A particularly tantalizing moment was Randal's guarded mention of WebAssembly. The Flutter and Dart teams' anticipation of introducing WebAssembly as a compilation target for web applications was evident, but, the details remain a closely guarded secret—for now.
